A VOICE FOR GABBY
Almost 15-year-old Gabby survives an explosion which takes the lives of her teammates and her spirit team sponsor. Her brain injury leaves her without memory or the ability to speak. Gabby’s dad helps with her educational rehabilitation through the summer after the accident. She decides she will work hard to represent her former team by being a good student.
Her neighbor, Josh, comes back into her life. He and his sister played with Gabby when they were younger. Josh’s affection for Gabby grows as he spends time with her. Her parents and Josh support her as she progresses through relearning how to read. She must also review eight years of schooling, for which she has no memory.
Still unable to speak Gabby retakes ninth grade at Hillyer, a school better suited to her educational situation. She discovers she can dance and has gymnastics ability learned over past years. Dancing brings her happiness, and she hopes that somehow she may start to regain other parts of her memory.
Josh and Gabby now attend the same school. Their friendship grows. Gabby discovers sexual feelings in herself and for Josh. Her mom gives her a book explaining what is going on with her body. Gabby does well at Hillyer and begins to feel she is catching up in her studies, except in English. Spelling and writing essays continue to be difficult for her. Her English teacher suggests books she needs to read over the summer before her sophomore year. A part time job and reading books keep her busy. She passes both her written and practical driving exams and becomes a cautious driver.
Josh suffers serious injuries while riding his bike. Gabby spends time with him through his hospitalization and rehabilitation. She loves him, as he loves her. Gabby joins a new spirit team at Hillyer. Dancing brings her joy. While out riding bikes with Josh as part of his rehab, she speaks two words. With speech therapy she begins to regain her voice, from a loud soprano in the past to a soft, scratchy alto now. At the first fall pep assembly she dances with the new spirit team. As she performs, she feels a bright light surrounding her. She remembers again what a miracle she is.
